QUEEN'S PRIDE PROJECT
Formed in 2008/2009, QPP was created to organize and plan Pride Week for Queen's University in Kingston Ontario. The very first Pride Week was organized in 2006/2007 by EQuIP (Education on Queer Issues Project) but as more and more events were added the queer community and their allies on campus decided that a seperate club was needed to handle such an elaborate project. Pride Week's focus is on a balance of social and educational events for the queer community and their allies at Queen's and the surrounding Kingston area. Our hope is to foster and provide a queer-positive environment for continued education of queer issues. Events are planned to cover a spectrum of issues and to reach as many people as possible - from first years to tenured professors.
2010 will mark Pride Week's 4th year on campus. We feel that Pride Week should serve as an event to remember the struggles that the queer community has undergone to achieve the rights and freedoms the current Queer community enjoys today. It is also a time to celebrate our individual identities and take pride in who we are. We hope to educate the Queens and Kingston community on queer and queer-related issues to promote greater acceptance and understanding, and foster a positive space for continued learning on campus. In this way we hope to build a greater sense of community, and expand our connections to build alliance with students,
professors, other institutions (St Lawrence and RMC) and Kingston residents.
While QPP realizes the controversial nature of the term 'queer', we feel it is an all-inclusive term allowing us to refer to the community which has a sexual orientation and/or gender identity that does not conform to heteronormative society. While we understand that not everyone will be supportive of this term we hope it is accepted for our purposes.
